About Mark Smutny at Civic Reinventions, Inc.
I founded Civic Reinventions, Inc. to help nonprofits and civic organizations uncover the wisdom hidden in their diversity, build cohesion, and achieve their goals. My techniques can change meetings from dull and deadly to innovative and energy-packed. Nonprofits who have experienced my inclusive meeting designs report increased creativity, commitment, strategic focus, and mission success.

I can help your nonprofit discover how the full engagement of every employee and stakeholder leads to powerful results, as well as being the right thing to do. During consultations, I will teach your nonprofit team tips and tools they can use to make diversity, equity and inclusion a greater reality in your organization than it is now.

• I can work with your leadership to design and facilitate a strategic planning process that engages everyone and therefore is owned by everyone--no more unread strategic plans gathering dust on a bookshelf.
• I can facilitate your annual planning retreat, drawing out the best ideas from everyone, bringing focus to your strategic goals and specificity to your business plans.
• I can lead workshops or online webinars for your team on inclusive meeting practices, especially useful for nonprofit leaders who want to strengthen cohesion and engagement.
• I can show your team how cultural assumptions about power and privilege, leadership, hierarchy, and communication shape meetings and how to change those dynamics with tools and techniques that are respectful of differences.

For decades, I have been facilitating meetings in nonprofits as an executive, board member, consultant and faith leader. I have led retreats and worked with nonprofits in human services, transportation, medical services, affordable housing, homeless services, civic engagement, business associations and faith-based groups. I teach, write and speak on the arts of inclusive facilitation.

One of my lifelong passions has been strengthening community, building inclusive organizations and creating a more compassionate society. I believe people and organizations are at their best when they embrace all voices and demonstrate respect for all cultures. My years as a change agent, organizer and nonprofit leader give me an extensive toolkit. Most of all, I begin by listening.

When not working, my soulmate and I hike, garden, fly fish, cook with friends and family, exercise with our dogs, and enjoy our four granddaughters.
